FM Baerbock implied that international law grants Ukraine the right to strike projectile launch sites in enemy territory.

On Monday, German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius confirmed that his country will deliver 4,000 German drones powered by artificial intelligence to Ukraine.

“From what I’ve heard, the Americans are now allowing the Ukrainians to use ATACMS with a range of 300 kilometers to target inside Russia as well. It’s a decision that is not mine to judge, but it will undoubtedly help the Ukrainians. For us, it doesn’t change the situation,” he stated.

During a visit to the MBDA armaments consortium in southern Germany, journalists asked Pistorius whether he anticipated increased pressure from Ukraine to receive Germany’s long-range Taurus cruise missiles.

He said he could not answer that and reiterated that there would be “no” change in Germany’s stance. Nevertheless, Pistorius confirmed that Germany would begin delivering 4,000 AI-controlled attack drones to President Zelensky’s regime.

This type of weaponry will represent “another really important asset for the Ukrainian forces, especially when it comes to targeting logistics chains and command posts inside enemy territory,” he said.

The so-called Mini-Taurus drones can penetrate 30 to 40 kilometers, strike command posts and logistics nodes, and have the capability to undermine enemy electronic defenses to hit their targets.

Meanwhile, German government deputy spokesperson Wolfgang Büchner reiterated Chancellor Olaf Scholz’s refusal to supply Taurus missiles to Ukraine, emphasizing that “the Chancellor has set certain limits he does not want to cross and has clearly stated that this position will not change.

These long-range weapons will not be delivered.” Scholz has repeatedly stressed the importance of organizing military support in a way that does not lead to an escalation of the war, Büchner added.

Regarding the U.S. decision, Büchner declined to comment, noting that the German government has refrained from commenting on individual decisions made by other countries supporting Ukraine.

German Foreign Affairs Minister Annalena Baerbock, however, described the U.S. decision as “important” at this moment, clarifying that it does not represent a change of course but rather an “intensification” of the existing support for Kyiv. She implied that international law grants Ukraine the right to strike projectile launch sites in enemy territory, adding that any other country would do precisely the same.
